June 17, 1924 – Feb. 18, 2011 MONTROSE – Clara Louise Smith, 86, a longtime resident of Montrose, died at 12:33 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, in Keokuk Area Hospital.
She was born on June 17, 1924, in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of Frank and Edith Knight Johnson.
She married Raymond N. Smith Jr. on April 28, 1947, in St. Louis. He preceded her in death on March 21, 1992.
She worked for Singer Sewing Center as a clerk and sewing teacher until she retired in 1986. Clara was a very talented seamstress and particularly enjoyed knitting sweaters for her family.
She was a member of Church of God - Anderson in St. Louis and attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Montrose.
Every month for 30 years she showed slides at the Montrose Health Center of her family's travels.
Survivors include: two daughters, Sandy Storment and her husband, Dick, of Choteau, Mont., and Cathye Wehr of Walsh, Colo.; two grandchildren, 'Chelle Peterson of Scappoose, Ore.; and Erik Peterson and his wife, Bobby, of Fort Carson, Colo.; four great-grandchildren, Autumn, Austin, Devin and Cody; a brother, Grover Johnson of Collinsville, Ill.; six nieces, Dona Hallinan, Peggy Jordan, JoAnn Johnson, Karen McGraw, Susan Johnson and Cindy Smith; and a nephew, David Shafer.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Cassel and Warren Johnson; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Montrose, with the Rev. Goldie Laymon officiating.
Burial will follow in Keokuk National Cemetery.
