Mr. I. Wayne "Smitty" Smith, Galesburg Chapel
93, 1250 W. Carl Sandburg Dr., formerly of 1190 W. Grove St., Galesburg, died at 5:49 PM Friday, June 27, 2008 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born May 19, 1915 in Cantril, IA, the son of James Arthur and Nellie Ann Parsons Smith. He married Helen Jeanette Oliver on February 22, 1941 in Missouri. She preceded him in death on May 6, 2007.
He is survived by 3 daughters, Karen (and Paul) Jehling, Pamela Whittom, and Cheryl (and Edward) Ordaz, all of Galesburg, 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and a sister, Rosalie Smith Hiller of Dallas, TX. He was preceded in death by a brother, Everett Smith and a sister, Mildred Smith Blanchard.
Wayne worked for the Galesburg Register-Mail for 28 years, first as a linotype operator, then as the composing room foreman. He retired in 1980 and continued to work part time as a bookkeeper for 20 years. He graduated from Cantril High School in 1931. He had lived in Galesburg since 1952 and was a member of the First Christian Church.
Wayne served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was stationed in Europe and was awarded the Bronze Star.
Funeral will be 10 AM Tuesday, July 1, 2008 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. M J Fitch will officiate. Visitation will be 9 to 10 AM Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will be at 1 PM Tuesday in the Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk, IA, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 41 and VFW Post 358 Honor Guard.
