, 84, of Galesburg, died at 2:35 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2011 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born December 12, 1926 in Galesburg, the son of Fay B. and Flora M. Thurlby Smith. He married Connie Martinez in 1951 and later married Susan New in 1961.
He is survived by eight sons, Pete (Doris) Smith of Good Hope, Ill., James (Arlene) Smith of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Jack Smith of Eugene, Ore., Jerry Smith of Galesburg, Thomas (Judi) Smith of Galesburg, Richard (Cindy) Smith of Enid, Okla., Randy (Tina) Smith of Williamsfield, Ill., and Robert (Nikki) Smith of West Bend, Wis.; five daughters, Susan (John) McGraw of Galesburg, Rosemarie Raska of Galesburg, Becky (Dave) McGraw of Rio, Ill., Julie (Bill) McGraw of Galesburg, and JoAnne Cox of Galesburg; a daughter-in-law, Lorry Smith of Galesburg; 65 grandchildren; 53 great grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Smith of Galesburg and Wayne Smith of San Antonio, Texas; and two sisters, Betty Valdez of Del Rio, Texas and Patricia Haneghan of Knoxville, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, four sisters, and two sons, John Smith and Edward Smith.
James was a bartender and cook at Soangetaha Country Club for several years before retiring in 1989. He attended Galesburg schools. He enjoyed watching any baseball game, but was an avid and enthusiastic Pittsburgh Pirates fan. He loved watching his children and grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday April 27, 2011 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Pastor Tyson T. Parks will officiate. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.
