Jeremiah Smith was the son of Jeremiah Smith and Jemimah Holley, and brother to George N. Smith. He married Joanna Dillon, Dec 16, 1798. Joanna was a sister to George Smith's wife, Clarissa "Clara" Dillon.
The 13 known children of Jeremiah and Joanna were: Holly, Martha "Patsie", Eli, Jeane, Edwin, Wyatt, Eliza, Calvin, Liddy, Mahala, Melovie, JoAnn "Annie", and Jeremiah.
*Note: There has been much confusion between the mother of Jeremiah Smith, Jemimah Holley and the Jemimah Hollis that was a daughter of Moses Hollis and Rosannah Hagan. These were two very different women.
The parents of Jerry Smith were Jeremiah Smith Sr. who died prior to March 1810 in Wilkinson Co., Ga and Jemima Holley who died at her home on the Tangipahoa River near the current town of Tangipahoa, LA.

JEREMIAH CAME FROM LANCASTER CO., SC IN 1808. HE MOVED IN A CART, AND SETTLED NEAR DILLONTOWN, PIKE CO. MS. HE WAS ONE OF THE FINEST MECHANICS OF HIS TIME. ("PIKE CO. HISTORY") The story is that after he built his house, the Spanish West Florida surveyors came through and he found he was not in U.S. territory. So he moved across the line to Pike Co, Mississippi, near Dillontown. Later, he heard hammering nearby and went to see who his new neighbor was. It was his brother George, who had come later with their mother. Neither had known where the other was. Jeremiah served in the War of 1812. George married Joanna's sister Clara in 1817.

JEREMIAH AND JOANNA BECAME MEMBERS OF THE SILVER CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH 6TH OF AUGUST 1827. (CHURCH MINUTES):

1829--In March of this year Jeremiah Smith introduced the question of "Washing the Saint's Feet” in the conference of the church. 'The consideration of the matter was confined to the April meeting and again postponed until May, and was then decided to be a church duty to be performed after worship at any set time by the church. But, it was also added: "The church disclaims the idea of enforcing it in those who dissent therefrom.” This custom continued in the churches in this section of country for more than thirty years.-—In August Thompson Wallis v.as made clerk. Benjamin Morgan was made "cashier to hold all money contributed for the house of the Lord.’’—Willis Simmons and Thompson Wallis were elected delegates to the association.

1830.— Jeremiah Smith and Willis Simmons were made delegates to the Baptist Association.

1831.—Early in the year, Thompson Wallis, after nearly two years of service resigned the clerkship and Henry Simmons was made clerk. Jeremiah Smith was made treasurer.—Jeremiah Smith and Willis Simmons elected delegates to the association.

1833.—Committee was appointed to transcribe minutes from old book to new one, viz: Jeremiah Smith, Richard Forrest, Thompson i, Wallis, S. P. Shope and Henry Simmons.

1834. —The committee appointed last year to transcribe the minutes gave up the task and was discharged. It would have been a hard task and almost useless, as they are brief and indefinite to be satisfactory history. They continued to use the old original book for recording the minutes through this year, and then began with a new book. The hand writing of the minutes changes with the close of last year, l833, but there is no mention of change of church clerk, and no record of delegates to the association.-Measures of discipline occupied attention of the church during the year.

The Land Certificate No. 6069, from Ihe United States Receiver’s office, at Washington, Mississippi, bearing date December 29, 1838, and certifying to the payment of the sum of fifty dollars from Reason Burns, Jeremiah Smith, and Henry Simmons, trustees, for forty acres of land, to-wit: N. E. Quarter of the N. W. Quarter, of Section Two (2). Township One (1). Range Nine (9) East, on which the church was located, was presented to the church and recorded in the minutes.
