Estella M.E. (Smeltzer) Ferree, 93, of Country Meadows at Leader Heights, formerly of Spry and Red Lion, died Saturday, September 13, 2008, at the residence, where she lived since January. She was the wife of the late Wilson L. 'Bill' Ferree, who passed away December 22, 1987.
Mrs. Ferree was born August 9, 1915, in Springfield Township, a daughter of the late D. Alfred and Elsie M. (Ziegler) Smeltzer. She was a seamstress for all of her life, having worked at South Pine Nightwear, David Suit Co., Mary Mites, and Marcy Manufacturing, from where she retired in 1980. She was also known for her hand smocked dresses. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Dallastown, the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and the Red Lion Senior Center. She also enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles, antiques and the Baltimore Orioles.
She leaves two daughters, Gwendolyn A. Wise and her husband, Chet of Dallastown and Cheryl L. Keener and her husband, Terry of Jacobus; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Frey and Cindy Ness both of Dallastown, Pamela Anderson of Midlothian, Va., David L. Ferree of Powell, Ohio, Matthew Wise of Jacobus, Scott Keener of Clayton Del., and Douglass Keener of Landisville; also 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and a daughter-in-law, Madalene M. Sheeley of Red Lion. She was also preceded in death by a son, Wilson 'Billy' Ferree, Jr.; greatgrandson, Eric Frey; three brothers, Daniel, Verner, and C. Cleatus Smeltzer; and a by her companion, Daniel Herbst.
Graveside services will be held at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.
