DAVENPORT — Funeral services for Alvin B. Smeltzer, 89, of Davenport, will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport. Family will greet friends on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Mortuary. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 299, Davenport.
Cunnick-Collins Mortuary and Cremation Service, Davenport, assisted the family with arrangements. Alvin passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2011, at his residence in Davenport. Alvin Benjamin Smeltzer was born on June 26, 1921, in Davenport, the son of Alvin and Edna (Mairet) Smeltzer. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. On July 7, 1945, he married Margaret Griffin in Davenport. She preceded him in death in May 2003. He was owner/operator of Smeltzer Carpentry, and later worked as a carpenter for Speletich and Teel Construction until his retirement in 1984. Alvin and his brother, Erwin, then owned Smeltzer Woodworking Shop. In his early years, Alvin enjoyed fishing, camping and playing cards. He also enjoyed his family and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his daughter, Debbie (Brad) Van Blaricom of Eldridge, Iowa; six sons, John (Gloria) Smeltzer of Colona, Ill., Ron (Charlene) Smeltzer of Davenport, Chuck (Karen) Smeltzer of Greendale, Wis., Mike (Kathy) Smeltzer of Davenport, Joe Smeltzer of Palestine, Ill., and Larry (Candy) Smeltzer of Davenport; a brother, Donald (Barb) Smeltzer of Rock Island; 24 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Thomas, and a brother, Erwin. Memorials may be made to the family. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Oncology and Radiology staff at Genesis West, and also Genesis Hospice for their care during Alvin's illness.
