Helen was the daughter of Maurice Harvey Smart and Marion R. Robbins. She attended Rye schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1947.

She was married to Wade M. Burnette on June 19, 1949, along with her brother and sister-in-law at Briar Motor Sport Park in Loudon, N.H., in front of 50,000 people.

Helen was an avid motorcyclist and was a member of Frank's Rider. Before her retirement, she was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a secretary for the Group Master in Shop 31, retiring after 34 years. She was formerly employed as a secretary for Judge Thomas Simms and also helped run Wade Taxi, which was owned by her husband, Wade. For many years, she was an activist working against the state of Maine for tax relief for New Hampshire residents who were employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

She was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth and a member of the North Church Choir; was actively involved in the organizing of class reunions, Class of 1947; and was a member of the Portsmouth Taxpayers Association, American Motorcycle Association and the Portsmouth/Kittery Armed Services.
