Virginia Kay Hougardy was born July 17, 1939, in Fredonia the daughter of Clyde Smalley and Bernice (Barnes) Smalley. She lived most of her life in the Southeast Kansas area and attended local schools.
She loved going to auctions to find that perfect car load of treasures. She loved to cook and sew and made quilts for all her children and others. Ginger was compassionate about people, especially her grandkids. One of her quotes was “be nice to people.”
Ginger married Gary Olson; they later divorced. She married Jack Hougardy; they later divorced. She married James Humphrey; they later divorced.
Ginger and Jack owned and operated Ginger’s Café and the Old Rock House in Thayer for many years.
Ginger earned her registered nurse nursing degree in 1991. She worked for Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute and Wilson County Medical Center in Neodesha before retiring in 2014.
She attended First Christian Church of Independence.
Surviving children and their families are Alan and Sharon Hougardy, Mark Hougardy and Kaydin and Kale, Casey Hougardy and Andrew, David Hougardy and Tara, Amy Hougardy, Vickie and Art Hale, Jackie Rash and Mike Schierlman, Shalie Rash and Ethan Schierlman, Deke Leck and Tosha Edmonds, Kolton and Carson Leck, Ronnie Johnson and Coleman Adams, Stephen Hougardy, Brittanie and Gabriel Meza and Gage, Karen Hougardy, Andrea Oliphant, Nevaeh, Nadia Reina and Joseph, Bradley Oliphant; brothers and sisters, Mavis (Clydene) and Myron Moser, Sherry and Marvin Williams, Thomas and Mary Smalley, Nykola and Ron Peterson, LaJuana Magill and Noel Smalley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Larry Smalley; and a daughter, Sandra Hougardy.
A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Wickham Family Funeral Home, 216 E. Fourth St., Cherryvale. Friends may sign the register book from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday. The family will welcome friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Cherryvale.
Memorial remembrances are suggested to the Ronald McDonald House or Cherryvale Food Bank and they may be left or mailed to the funeral home
