Dr. David Allen Sloas passed away from cancer on Monday, November 19, 2012 at his home in Memphis, Tennessee.
He was one month shy of his 86th birthday. David was born December 22, 1926 in New Madrid County, Missouri to Effie and Robert Edward Sloas; he was the seventh of their eight children.
David graduated from high school at the age of 16 and attended the University of Missouri. His education was interrupted by his service in the army during World War II. Afterward, he entered Kansas State University to finish his undergraduate work. He then continued at Kansas State's school of veterinary medicine.
Last year, Dr. Sloas was proud to attend his 59th vet school reunion in Manhattan, Kansas. David had the rare blessing of doing a job that he loved. After several years of treating small and large animals in Southeast Missouri, he practiced at Berclair Animal Hospital for over 50 years.
He also had a great passion for farming, and his second career was overseeing his and his wife's land in Arkansas.
David is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Annette Whistle Sloas, his parents, and his brothers Harold and Robert and sisters Camille and Lucille.
He is survived by his children, Dr. David D. Sloas, Shana Sloas Walker, and Dr. Melisse Sloas Baylor, and his grandchildren: Christopher, Evelyn, Greta, Colt, and a grandson on the way.
Dr. Sloas never met a stranger and had a multitude of friends and neighbors who all loved him.
David and his wife were members of the Friendship Class at Emmanuel United Methodist Church for over 30 years.
The family would like to thank his "adopted" daughter and granddaughter, Luba Snyezk and Anya, along with Luba's husband, Roman for their wonderful care of Dr.Sloas. Thanks also goes to Annie for her love and attention of Dr. Sloas in his later years.
The funeral will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, November 21st at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 2404 Kirby Road in Memphis.
The family asks that any donations in his memory be sent to Emmanuel United Methodist Church. Services are entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral HOme & Cemetery. "Behind the Stone Wall"
