Birth: May 3, 1899
Jefferson County
Montana, USA
Death: Jun. 6, 1957
Los Angeles County
California, USA

Daisy was the youngest daughter of William Crawford and Isa (Marsh) Sloan. She was born in Whitehall, Montana and raised on the 480 acre family ranch located on the Madison River in Gallatin County.

At age 8 (1907) the family moved to Lewistown (Fergus County) so Daisy attended school there along with her 3 sisters (Jeannette, Pearl, & Ruth) and 3 brothers (Clinton, Martin, & William Asa).

Shortly after her father died in 1909, the family moved to Whitehall where her mother's parents lived. Isa homesteaded property near Whitehall which presumably is where the family lived.

Daisy attended Whitehall High School and graduated in 1918. The following year her mother, Isa, died and the children went to live with various relatives. Daisy and her brother Clinton lived with her Marsh grandparents in Whitehall.

After graduating, Daisy worked at the Whitehall Creamery where she met Ed Schmitt. In 1921 Ed proposed marriage and told Daisy he wanted to move to either Los Angeles or Chicago; Daisy chose Los Angeles. So they moved to Los Angeles in May 1921 and were married there in June 1921.

Being a journeyman carpenter, Ed built a home for them on 112th Street shortly after moving to Los Angeles. The house still stands as of 2012 (photo of Daisy is on the front porch of this house). In 1922, Daisy and Ed had their only child, Lorraine Doris.

Daisy and Ed took Lorraine on several trips, including one to Montana in their "Hupmobile" when Lorraine was about 5 years old. In 1939 they joined thousands of people who took advantage of Greyhound Bus' promotional tours to the New York World's Fair, also stopping in Washington, DC and Allentown, Pennsylvania to visit Ed's mother and sisters.

During WWII Daisy worked briefly as a supervisor at the local Goodyear Rubber plant making some sort of war equipment. We have a "memory book" of handwritten wishes from the women she supervised when Daisy quit her position; by those accounts she was treasured by the women she supervised.

In the early 1950's, Ed built a new home in Lynwood, California for the family, complete with a sizable garden. As Ed and Daisy were my maternal grandparents, I spent many overnights at this home having a wonderful time with the toys kept for us there and good meals at the kitchen table!

It was a terrible shock when Daisy was found dead of a sudden heart attack in 1957 at age 58. Most of her brothers and sisters came from other parts of the State and Country to attend her funeral.
