Betty Nichols Slaughter, age 88, died March 3, 2010 at her daughter's home in Mansfield, Texas. For the past seventy years she resided in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. She was born to E. Lee and Flossa Nichols on February 13, 1922 and had two brothers Lee and Jim. Betty graduated from Texhoma Oklahoma High School in 1939 where she played on the basketball team and was the baton-twirling majorette of the band. While attending Oklahoma Panhandle State University she was a table tennis champion. She eloped with Wayne Freeman Jr. from Highland Park of Dallas and they attended the University of Texas in Austin. They were married for 22 years, enjoyed boating, and spending weekends at their Lake Lewisville vacation home. Wayne died on August 25, 1972 at the age of 50.

Betty's passion for skeet shooting developed into a career of instructional marksmanship which culminated in her qualifying for the 1966 Olympic team in international style (from the hip) skeet shooting. In 1968 Betty married George M. Slaughter III of Fort Worth. Betty pursued her interests in traveling, turquoise jewelry, cosmetics, and fashion. Married for forty years they were respectfully and affectionately called "king" and "queenie" in their later years. George, a World War II veteran, preceded her in death on December 15, 2008 at the age of 84. They spent many extended summers in their New Mexico home where they nearly perfected their golf skills and won many tournaments at the Pendaries Golf and Country Club. Betty liked feeding the local birds and squirrels. She enjoyed the company of nine dogs over her lifetime; her favorite charity is the SPCA.

Her survivors are: two sons Jim Freeman of Southlake, Texas, Bobby Freeman of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and a daughter, Dr. Candy F McDaniel. Also four stepchildren, George IV, J Mack, Cynthia, Bob Slaughter, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren survive her. Services will be held at the DFW National Cemetery on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 11 a.m
