Mary Christine Skelton nee Carr was born April 30, 1949, at Newport, Rhode Island. Raised in a Navy family, she grew up principally in Hawaii and Carmel-by-the-Sea, as well as other places where her father, a Naval aviator, was stationed. Mary was a graduate of Sacred Hearts Academy, Honolulu, Hawaii, and the University of California at Berkeley, where she majored in Russian History.
She married John (“Jack”) Skelton on October 21, 1972, at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. They had three children, Jessica, Andrew and Zachary.
Mary died unexpectedly at home in Woodside, California, on Friday morning, October 25, 2002, after a lengthy illness. She had just said goodbye to her children and sent them off to school.
Beloved and loving wife of John Skelton and mother of Jessica and Zachary Skelton. Devoted sister of Steven, Timothy, Christopher, and Peter Carr, and Catherine Burke. Cherished daughter-in-law of Mary Catherine Skelton of Pacific Grove. Preceded in death by her son Andrew, and her parents, Charles A. and Edith L. Carr.
Mary was a warm, generous and truly kind person, a gentle soul, always concerned about others before herself. She gave tirelessly of herself, even in illness, to family, friends, church and community, and was active on behalf of numerous school, conservation and animal welfare causes. She was a caring and loyal friend to the many extended family, friends and colleagues who were fortunate enough to have known her; a good and decent person who added to every life she touched. She will be greatly missed.
We will all be a little more alone in this world without her.
