In 1870, Henry Skelton, 42, was residing with Malinda, 24, Lillian, 4, Lucretia, 3, and Grace 1, in Snelling, Merced County, California. Henry was a merchant and was born in Alabama, Malinda was keeping house and was born in Texas, and the children were born in California. DEATH OF HENRY AUSTIN SKELTON, ONE OF MERCED'S PIONEERS.--We had hoped to have received the full particulars of the last illness and death of Mr. Skelton. We had a right to expect that his relatives would have written to use upon the subject. Those interested know all about his life. It is the last hours of which his friends would like to hear; failing to get such information, we can only say that he died on the 21st of November, at the residence of his brother, Mr. Blackstone Skelton, of Mariposa.

At the age of 22, Henry came to California in 1849 from Shelby County, Alabama. At one time he was one of the prominent businessmen of Merced. He was well known for an industrious and upright manner. He died in bed on November 11, 1878 after being ill for several months. He left a wife and several children.
