DELIA ALMINA FERRY
was the oldest of six children born to Melancthon and Marietta Ferry. She was born July 17, 1846, in Naperville Township, Illinois, and shared all the experiences common to rural communities during the period which her life covers. Not many, however, find their lives overshadowed at twelve years of age as her's was by the death of her mother. Added to the sorrow of bereavement was the responsibility of caring for the infant baby sister, and a disproportionate share of the cares of the motherless home. So well were the lessons of patience and fortitude learned by the deceased, that in later years many were the homes and frequent the occasions when her help in times of sickness and hardship proved invaluable to the neighborhood.
In December, 1862, deceased was united in marriage to William Simpson. Three children came to share the life of this home near Naperville. Edgar, Carrie, Frank. The influence and ministry of the Big Woods Congregational church contributed to the development of their lives. Mrs. Simpson's membership has since been transferred however to the membership of the First Congregational church at Naperville, Ill.
Mrs. Simpson suffered the loss of her husband on Jan. 29, 1883. She is survived by but one sister of her own immediate family, and one half-sister, and one half-brother, and also by her three children and ten grandchildren. The last twelve years of her life have been spent in the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. C. VanNorman. For nine months she battled bravely against the illness which finally culminated in her death on Friday, November 20, 1914. Not until towards the very end did she give up the hope of recovery. Among the things which ministered to her comfort during her illness was her meditation upon a part of the fifth verse of the 5th chapter of John's Gospel, "Search the Scriptures for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they that testify of Me."
