WATERBURY — Mrs. Clara (Simmons) Phillips, 87, of [street address removed], died Monday, March 12, 2007, at Wolcott View Manor after a long illness. She was the widow of David Lee Phillips.
Mrs. Phillips was born March 22, 1919, in Tuskegee, Ala., a daughter of the late Fred and Margaret (Tolbert) Simmons. She was educated in the Alabama public school system and was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where she was an active choir member and treasure holder. After moving to Waterbury more than 40 years ago, Mrs. Phillips became a member of Zion Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and worked as a seamstress. She leaves to mourn her passing one son, Ossie Phillips of Waterbury; three daughters, Dorothy Sinclair, Rosa Etheredge and Ida Mae Sinclair, all of Waterbury; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bessie Lee Simmons, Margaret Simmons and Ida Mae Simmons, all of Tuskegee, Ala.; two brothers, Jeff Simmons and Fred Simmons, both of Tuskegee, Ala.; one son-in-law, Clem Peterson of Waterbury; three sisters-in-law, Louise Simmons and Hattie J. Foote, both of Tuskegee, Ala., and Carrie B. Simmons of Waterbury; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends. She was predeceased by three sons, David Phillips, Willie Phillips and Roosevelt Phillips; one daughter, Lucille Phillips; two sisters, Willie Mae Simmons and Roberta Love; and three brothers, Henry Simmons, Hoover Simmons and David Lee Simmons.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Baptist Church, 65 Kingsbury St., with the Rev. Larry Green officiating. Burial will be in New Pine Grove Cemetery. Calling hour will be held 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Chapel Memorial Funeral Home Inc., 35 37 Grove St., and 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service and at all other times at the home of her daughters, Dorothy Sinclair at 123 Shelley St., and Rosa Etheredge at 309 Lincoln St.
Arrangements have been entrusted to chapel Memorial Funeral Home Inc. 35-37 Grove St.
