SUN PRAIRIE - Dorothy Maxine Cummings, age 82, died on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at Meriter Hospital in Madison surrounded by her family. Dorothy passed peacefully from this life to begin her new life in God's eternal family. Dorothy touched many lives while she was with us, and everyone who knew her thought that she was indeed a very special person.
She was a veteran of World War II, serving as a nurse in the U.S. Navy. Dorothy had many friends in Monroe and at St. Claire Hospital where she worked 30 years as a nurse. Following her retirement, she moved to Sun Prairie to be closer to her family.
Dorothy was born on Aug. 21, 1921, in Fountain Green, Ill., as Dorothy Maxine Simmons. She was preceded in death by her parents; and by her infant son, Larry. She is survived by her twin sons, Gary (Novella) of Sun Prairie, and Terry of Verona; a brother, Wendell L. (Gladys) Simmons of Clearwater, Fla.; and a sister, Doris Ford of Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
The pride of her life was her four grandchildren, to whom she was Grandma Maxine, Jessie Cummings of Middleton, and Aaron, Justin, and Alexandra Cummings of Sun Prairie. She spent many hours sewing, crocheting, and making gifts for her family and friends, and enjoyed attending her grandchildren's activities. She will be dearly missed by her family and all those who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at the TUSCHEN-NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 302 Columbus St., in Sun Prairie, with Pastor Phillip Kenas presiding. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home on Friday. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Monroe, Wis., at 1 p.m. on Friday.
