Mrs. Bryant was not only the face of the Elberton Star, to many people, she was the newspaper. She died Wednesday, just weeks after marking her 70th Anniversary with the Elberton newspaper. Bryant went to work for the newspaper's job-printing department, printing business cards, stationery, posters and similar jobs, when Star owner Gradus T. Christian hired her in 1937. She went on to manage office supply sales and work at many other jobs at the newspaper.
She was also the first person who spoke to a walked-in visitor or caller to the newspaper, answering the phone untold thousands of times with "Hello, The Elberton Stah", in a musical Southern accent. "She had just a unique way of answering the phone, real Southern belle. I always loved calling over here just to hear her answer the phone," said Kerri Pruitt, the woman who took her place as the newspaper's receptionist.
