Nanci S. Harmelin Resident of Los Gatos, beloved mother, grandmother and friend passed away April 19th, 2010, at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, CA. Born March 15, 1924 to Anna and Michael Silver, Nanci lived a full life, raising 4 children, staying sharp and assisting others toward making the world a better place. Originally from New Jersey, Nanci married Morris L. Harmelin on May 30, 1944. Together they moved their family to CA in 1955 and resided in Palo Alto for 50 years. For the last 7 years of her life, Nanci was an active resident of The Meadows in Los Gatos, CA. Nanci and Morris were founding members of Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos Hills, CA where Nanci founded, organized and ran the Temple Youth Group, served as Sisterhood President and assisted in the growth of the Temple and its membership. Mrs. Harmelin was active in the communities in which she lived as a member of the PTA; a substitute English Teacher in the Palo Alto School System; member of various gourmet dinner groups; and was an avid Scrabble, Mahjong, Bridge and Poker Player. Residing at The Meadows in Los Gatos for the last 7 years, Mrs. Harmelin led an active lifestyle. Nanci was instrumental in establishing a "Wellness Program", initiated installation of electronic "Handicap" entry doors for residents, taught English as a 2nd language to some of the employees, took her turn at maintaining announcements for the residents' bulletin board, and drove others to appointments, and events while she was still able to drive. Nanci was preceded in death by: her husband of 59 years, Morris; her parents Anna and Michael; brother, Malcolm; and many other relatives. She is survived by: her children, Michael (Gail) Harmelin, Sandpoint, ID; Linda Burrough, San Jose, CA; Donald (Lynne) Harmelin, Ridgefield, CT; Joyce (Joel) Kaplan, Lafayette, CA., grandchildren: Jessica and Joseph Burrough; Peter, Caroline, and Benjamin Harmelin; Daniel & Rebecca Kaplan; niece Meg (Silver) Leib, nephew Charles Silver plus other relatives on both the East & West Coasts. Nanci S. Harmelin will be truly missed by those whose lives she touched. Her family expresses much thanks to Good Samaritan Hospital, its' doctors, nurses, technicians, and all those who made Nanci's transition as peaceful as possible. A Memorial Service will be held May 16th, 2:30 p.m., at The Meadows, 110 Wood Rd., Los Gatos, CA. 95030.
