MONMOUTH - Vera F. Cofield, 89, Monmouth, Ill., passed away at 2:05 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 23, 2007) at Mill Pond Nursing Home, Ankeny, Iowa. Vera was born Sept. 23, 1917, in rural Monmouth, the daughter of Richard and Sadie (Cavanaugh) Shunick. Vera was reared and educated in the Monmouth area and attended Immaculate Conception School, Monmouth High School and Monmouth College.
Vera married Earl C. Cofield on Oct. 4, 1947, in Monmouth. He preceded her in death Nov. 16, 1990.

After college Vera went to work for Illinois Bankers Life Insurance Co. in Monmouth, then worked as secretary for Ed Love, attorney in Monmouth, and later as secretary at the Warren County Highway Department until her marriage in 1947. In 1965, she returned to the highway department and worked until her retirement in 1979. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, its Altar and Rosary Society and the Rose Hawthorne Book Club.

Vera is survived by three sons, Greg Cofield and Connie of Parker, Colo., Joseph Cofield and Julie of Needham, Mass., and Phillip Cofield and Wendy of Salt Lake City, Utah; one daughter, Rosemary Freel and Jeff of Altoona, Iowa. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Jennifer Cofield, Jason Cofield, Justin Cofield, Drew Cofield, Calla Cofield, Megan Cofield, Allison Freel and Jonathan Freel; two sisters, Rosemary Shunick of Monmouth, and Sister Veronica OSB; one brother, Dick Shunick and Marjorie Ann of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one sister-in-law, Liane Shunick of Lake Warren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, Tom Shunick, and one sister, Sister Bernadette OSB.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth. A rosary will be recited at Turnbull Funeral Home at 6:45 p.m. Sunday with visitation to follow. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Monmouth.

A memorial fund was established for Immaculate Conception Church.
