Emma Virginia (Rieves) Shumate was born on June 30, 1881 in Davidson County, Tennessee, and she was the daughter of John G Rieves (1854–1931) and Alice (Hammond) Rieves (1854–1896).

She was married in 1903 as the 1st wife of Lacy Boyd Shumate (1882–1943), the son of John Tolliver Shumate (1847–1912) and Sarah Adelaide (Patton) Shumate (1850–1942).

Still in Davidson County, Emma was 23 years old and married when she died on December 28, 1904. Burial was in Hays-Rieves Cemetery in Antioch.
