|Birth: ||Mar. 22, 1869|
|Death: ||Jan. 16, 1955|
To the friends and loved ones of Jane Shuler Neff (Mrs. Lundus) her death Sunday, January 16th came as no shock. For several months she had been confined to the Moore's Nursing home in Wytheville. Jane Shuler Neff was born March 22, 1869 in Grayson County, Va. She was one of the twelve children of Allen Troy Shuler and Leatha Hale Shuler. Her early years were spent in that community.
She was married to Lundus Wythe Neff, of Wythe County, Virginia on January 10, 1894, coming to this community of Rural Retreat to live. To this union were born four children, two of whom survive, Mr. Lundus Harvey of Rural Retreat; Mrs. Hazel Geoghegan James, who teaches at Rural Retreat; Isaac Walker died in infancy; Meek, another son, died in 1946. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Lundus Harvey Neff of Galax, Va.; Raymond Michael Neff of Charlotte, N.C.; Mrs. Alexander Atkins of Dutton, Va., and Miss Lorena Neff of Greensboro, N.C. A great grandson, Alexander Atkins, Jr., of Dutton, Va.
Other survivors include a sister, Mrs. J. F. Holland of Herkimer, N.Y., Lindsey Shuler of Christiana, Penna.; C. K. Shuler of Omaha, Nebr.; William and Lester of St. Edward, Nebr.
Mrs. Neff became a confirmed member of the Lutheran Church at an early age and remained a loyal and consistent Christian to the end.
From the 31st chapter of Proverbs we find passages that fittingly describe her life. "Who can find a virtuous woman for her price is far above rubies. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea she reacheth forth her hand to the needy. She openeth her mouth with wisdom and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also and he praiseth her. Give her of the fruit of her hands and let her own words praise her in the gates".
Jane Neff was a great homemaker, a beloved mother and a friend of many who have shared through the years some work of her hands, beautiful flowers, beautiful sewing and delicious food. She loved people and people loved her.
