Anna Blanche Shue Atkins, of Chesterfield, Virginia, died Thursday, July 29, 2010.

Born October 4, 1918, at Spice, she was the oldest of nine children born to the late Emery E. and Pearlie B. Williams Shue.

Anna married Paul J. Atkins in Staunton, Virginia, February 27, 1943. Since 1950 she had resided on their farm in Chesterfield, Virginia.

She attended West Virginia University, received her BSSS from Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary and her M. Ed. from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Anna was a Civilian Guard, "Pistol Packin' Mama," during World War II at Middelton, Pennsylvania Air Depot and Richmond Army Air Base, Richmond, Virginia, when RAAB opened.

She taught in Chesterfield County and Richmond, Virginia, public schools.

Anna belonged to the Scottish Society, several clubs, civic associations and Hopewell United Methodist Church in Chesterfield County, Virginia. She was a charter member of the Chesterfield Historical Society and, for awhile, was a sustaining member of the Pocahontas County Historical Society.

She compiled genealogy on her ancestral lines, Shue, Scott, Rose, Williams and Atkins, as one of her hobbies.

She received both the Golden and Silver Poetry Awards from the Wide World of Poetry. Though for "vain-glory" she was a published author several times and in several places.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Anna Lee Atkins White; four sisters; and a brother.

She is survived by her grandson, Laurence P. Mangiapane; and three sisters, Wenona McNeal and Berlene Long, both of Augusta, Georgia, and Vivian Gibson, of Maxwelton.

Graveside service was August 2 at Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Churchville, Virginia.
