Arrested for Bigamy
David Shotwell, who resides in the east part of the town and who is a man about 55 years of age, was arrested the other day on the charge of bigamy. The complaint was made by his second wife's sister, who is dissatisfied with some action he has taken in regard to settlement of family affairs. About 21 years ago Shotwell married a daughter of Alfred Shute, with whom he lived four or five years when she left him and went away, as David says. Some time after he heard she was dead, and about four years ago he married a daughter of Otis White, an he was advised by counsel he had a legal right so to do. Now his present wife's sister turns up a complainant and the case was set down for a hearing before Justice Olney next Tuesday, Shotwell is an old soldier, and pretty level headed when he is not to full, and intends to do about the square thing generally. If he has more wives on his hands now than the law allows, it was unintentional on his part, as he supposed the first one had gone to glory before he took the second. If Dave gets off this time he will wait til the grass is very green over two graves before he marries again.
