Emily Gertie Short Childress, age 76, of Raven, Virginia passed away Monday, January 27, 2014 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tennessee.
She was born December 20 1937 in Buchanan County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Hubert Short and Ida Belle Hill Simmons.
Ms. Childress attended Webb's Chapel for 53 years. She was a homemaker and was a lifelong resident of the area.
In addition to her mom and dad, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Abel Simmons;
and her mother's parents who raised her, Columbus and Ruthie Hill;
one granddaughter, Vanessa Michelle Puckett Johnson;
one son-in-law, Dennis Puckett;
and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by: Her husband of 57 years, Firl Childress
One Daughter: Donna Puckett Childress of Raven, Virginia
Three Sons: Michael Bostic and wife, Louise of Cedar Bluff, Virginia--Wendell Childress and wife, Imadean of Richlands, Virginia and Burley Childress of Raven, Virginia
Two Sisters: Judy Ward of Raven, Virginia and Estee Street of Rowe, Virginia
One Brother: Joe Simmons of Louisiana
Also surviving are six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one great great-grandchild and a host of family and friends.

Funeral Services for Emily Gertie Childress will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Friday, January 31, 2014 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. James Dye, Sr., Rev. David Lowe, and Rev. Chester Percilla officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be: Bobby Keith Hale, Bobby Hale, Bryant Justus, Tyler Puckett, Marcus Puckett, Robert Byrd, Steven Childress, Mickey Bostic, Devon Grimmett, and Joe Robinette. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm on Thursday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home; 1401 Second Street; Richlands, Virginia.
