Though the name on her tombstone is McCarty, her married name was Beard at the time of her death.

Mary Jane Beard, who passed away at Kansas City Thursday of last week, was buried here Saturday afternoon, the body being conveyed here by Stine & McClure, Kansas City undertakers. Mrs. Beard, whose maiden name was Short, was born in Miller County in 1864 and was 73 years old at the time of her death.
She was married in 1879 to Herman McCarty, who died in Tuscumbia about the year 1890. She was married to William Abbett in 1893, again in 1897 to O. B. Beard. Since the death of Mr. Beard she has been making her home with her children.
She is survived by five children: Charles Rosco Carty of Little Rock, Ark., Mrs. Zella Golden, Fred Carty and Sylvester Carty of Kansas City and Mrs. Vesta Lumpkin of Jefferson City. She also leaves to mourn her death a brother, Sherman Short of Kansas City, and a sister, Sadie, who is married and resides in Canada. There are also 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Beard resided a number of years near Tuscumbia, during which time she was a regular attendant at the Tuscumbia Christian Church and Sunday school of which she was a member, bringing with her to Sunday school her grandchildren and other children of near her home.
In recent years while living in West Alton, Kansas City of Little Rock, Ark. She frequently wrote the Tuscumbia Sunday school and each year remembered the school with her birthday offering.
Funeral services were conducted here at the Christian Church Saturday afternoon by T.C. Wright. The balance of this copy is missing.
