Helen Gold, 84, of Overland Park, KS, passed away March 20, 2002, at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center, which was the very location of her beloved family home. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24, at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost, Kansas City, MO with Interment in the Sheffield Cemetery. The family requests contributions be made to the Parkinson's Research-Dr. Pahwa, KUMC, 3901 Rainbow, Kansas City, KS 66160-7314 or charity of one's choice.
Helen was born on October 18, 1917 in Kansas City, KS. She moved with her family to Johnson County, KS in 1929, and helped run her parent's business, the Twin Oaks Dairy. She was a graduate of Shawnee Mission Rural (now North) High School, 1935, and the University of Missouri, 1939. She married Edward Gold on September 22, 1940 and actively participated in his restaurant businesses, including managing the Ranchmart Bar BQ for over 15 years. Helen's generosity included donating her rare blood type to strangers in need and caring for stray animals. She enjoyed nurturing flowers transplanted from the family farm. In spite of her struggle with Parkinson's for over twenty-five years, she managed to travel to Europe, Israel and China. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed cooking them traditional Jewish dishes. She was active in the Shawnee Mission High School Alumni Association, the University of Missouri Alumni Association, and a member of Hadassah and the Sisterhood of Ohev Shalom, the synagogue that her father helped found.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Edward Gold, her parents, Anna and Sol Sherr, her brothers, infant Joe Sherr and Benjamin Sherr. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Gold of Overland Park, son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Marleen Gold of Mission Hills, son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Susan Gold of Overland Park and many nephews, nieces and cousins. The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Helen's devoted care givers and all of their relatives for their love and support.
