Alex J. Sherr, 21, 5927 Hillhaven Drive, Erie, died Saturday, September 4, 2004, from injuries sustained in a military training exercise in North Carolina. He was born February 11, 1983 in Erie and is the son of Howard and Janet (Nientimp) Sherr of Erie, PA. He served in the United States Marine Corps for three years, including one tour of duty in Korea, and one tour of duty in Haiti. He was awarded the Religious Lay leader Award and Distinguished Marksmanship Award. He was a 2001 graduate of Central High School; he was employed at area businesses. He played Boys' Baseball and performed for nine years in the Summer Footlights Theatre. He was a recipient of the 29th Division Normandy Allies scholarship and traveled to England and France to trace his grandfather's role in the WW II D-Day Normandy Invasion. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Melvin Sherr and Lola Lawrence Sherr of Baltimore, MD, and by his maternal grandparents, Edward G. and Ruth Volk Nientimp of Erie. Survivors include his baby daughter, Ariel Jaylynn Sherr, his fiancée, Monica Benzo of Erie; his brother Matthew L. Sherr, New York, NY, and sisters Lynn Sherr, and Rachel Sherr Rudd and Christopher Rudd, of Erie; nieces Sydney and Grace Rudd; great aunt and uncle Sidney and Hilda Sherr, Baltimore, MD, many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Friends may call Friday 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street. A prayer service will be held there Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the A.J. Sherr Memorial Fund in care of the family, 5927 Hillhaven Dr., Erie, PA 16509.
