Dies Suddenly
Mr. George E. Bailey Drops Dead In Kitchen Over His Market
"Mr. George E. Bailey, who about two years ago opened a market and grocery store on outer Broadway, dropped dead in his kitchen over the market Monday.
He had been in his usual good health up to this morning, when he complained of a peculiar feeling in hi head. He had had had a headache Sunday, but not sufficient to keep him at home. This morning he was in attendance at his duties in the store and his customers did not notice that he was other than usual.
Mr. Bailey was a native of Hope Valley, having been born there February 17, 1872, and had been a resident of Newport a little more than twenty years, being at first in the employ of John H. Brierly on Lower Thomas Street and later in other meat and provision stores. In 1907 he started for himself on Elliott Place, with a small meat and provision store and gradually developed an excellent business, which outgrew the confines of the building in which he was located. Two years go last summer he opened a store on Broadway near Elliott Place, and with a monopoly of the business in that part of the city, increased the number of his customers. His indefatigable good nature, cheerfulness and desire to accommodate doing much to attract and hold trade.
The deceased was an active worker in the Thames Street Methodist Episcopal Church, where he has served as Steward, member of the choir, President of the Brotherhood, and in other capacities. Being especially interested in the social work, he was one of the mst active members of Newport Tent, Knights of the Macabees, of which he has served as Commander, of which he was Chaplain and at the time of his death he was also a member of Excelsior Lodge, I.O.O.F.
He is survived by a widow, formerly Miss Phoebe Tew, of this city, and two daughters."
