The death of Mrs. Corwin T. Gardner, Creighton resident for 21 years, Thursday evening at her home here, cast a pall of gloom over the entire community. Her passing was attributed to cancer of the liver, following a several weeks illness. Everything possible in medical science had been administered for her relief, but to no avail, and her condition gradually became worse, until she was claimed by her Maker.
Jennie Alice Sherman was born on September 8, 1866, at Allen, Mich., and died on March 16, 1933, at the age of 66 years, 6 months and 8 days. She lived in Michigan until she had attained the age of 20 years. In 1886 she followed her parents to Nebraska, who had moved near Royal the previous year. In both Michigan and Nebraska the deceased taught school for a number of years and was a conscientious worker. On March 11, 1894, she was united in marriage to Corwin T. Gardner. To this union four children were born, one son having preceded her in death on February 23, 1919. The family resided on a farm near Neligh, Nebr., and in 1901 removed to a farm near Creighton.
On June 25, 1912, Mr. Gardner was taken by death and Mrs. Gardner with her family came to Creighton, where she provided herself with a comfortable home and spent the remainder of her days.
Mrs. Gardner was a devout Christian and lived up to her faith to the last. She was of splendid character and exemplified many of the better and rarer virtues of true womanhood and was dearly loved by all who knew her, and most by those who knew her best. Her passing is a bereavement indeed, and she will be missed not only in the home, but in the community.
The surviving relatives are three daughters: Mrs. John Kahny, Pierce; Mrs. Philip Rickabaugh, Omaha and Miss Alice Gardner at home; her mother, Mrs. Kate Sherman; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. C.A. Holt, Des Moines, Ia. and Mrs. J.F. Passer, Blassvale, N.Y.
The last service was held from the Federated church on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by the pastor, Rev. D.E. Ramseyer. Many friends gathered to pay their last token of respect and express their sympathy for the family. Rev. Ramseyer delivered a very fitting eulogy.
"Rock of Ages" and "O, the Bliss, the Holy Rapture" were sung by Rev. and Mrs. Ramseyer and Misses Edith Riisness and Mary Ellen Bard. The floral display bore a silent tribute to the memory of the devoted woman. The body was taken to its last resting place in Greenwood cemetery.
