A consummate mother, grandmother and business woman, Dorothy was known for her personality and character. She was a mother to many that she came in contact with. Over her years, young women, some her age and older, gravitated to her, especially at her places of employment. She was a person full of wisdom that consoled those in needed. Dot was a loyal friend to many; she was always direct and up front.
Dot retired from Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) where she was an executive administrative assistant.
Dot was a woman of faith, trusted in the Lord, private and always pondered things within her heart. She was that Proverbs 31 woman in her household. The Lord was her strength and her fortress.
She was preceded in death by her father, Julius Sheppard; mother, Katherine Edward Sheppard; and sister, Mary Johnson. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Charles Edward Collins; sons, Eric L. Collins (Machelle) of North Chesterfield, Craig M. Collins (Jameka) of Fayetteville, N.C.; and daughter, Evangelist Charron Y. Brown (Minister Henry) of Petersburg. She is also survived by her brother, Billy Sheppard (Brenda) of Cape Coral, Fla., and two other sisters-in-law, Evangelist Angelene Johnson of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Patricia McCloud (Thomas) of Roselle, N.J.; eight grandchildren, Christian Collins, Marcell Water, Kaleb Collins, Leah Brown, Jadawn Collins, Charles Collins, Amara Collins and Janiya Collins; four great-grandchildren, Yasmeen Waters, Q'Mari Wilson, Danielle Waters and Marcell Waters Jr.; four nieces, McCleta Johnson, Dimirra McCloud, Meisha Johnson and Jacqueline Sheppad; four nephews, Harrison Johnson, Brock Johnson, Trent Johnson and Dirran McCloud; many cherished friends, to mention a few, Lillie, Deloris Underwood and Wendy Brown; and many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Our mother was a fighter and she fought a good fight to the end; she has received her crown; and now we say well done thy good and faithful servant you have been faithful over a few things and now enter into thy joy of the Lord. (Matthew 25:21)
Services for Mrs. Dorothy L. Collins will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at Higher Way Ministries, 515 Virginia Ave., Petersburg, Va.; Bishop Darren L. Gay, Pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia.
The family will receive friends at 3636 Birch's Bluff Road, North Chesterfield, Va.
