Lorenzo Dow SHEPPARD Sr. was the son of William SHEPPARD Sr., a Revolutionary Soldier of North Carolina, & Martha THORN. Based on census records, he was born between 1806 and 1815, and he died after 1880. He was the husband of Sarah Jane HODGES, who was born about 1810.
Lorenzo Dow & Sarah Jane were married in 1831, and were the parents of at least nine children born between 1836 and about 1857:
• Eminitt Jackson SHEPPARD I,
• Lemuel SHEPPARD Sr. (who settled in Effingham County),
• Jane B. SHEPPARD, the wife, first of Hezekiah K. ANDERSON, and then of Humphrey K. BAZEMORE,
• Victoria A. SHEPPARD, the wife of George W. JACKSON,
• Lorenzo Dow SHEPPARD Jr. (buried in Effingham County),
• Thomas Henry SHEPPARD,
• Stephen SHEPPARD,
• William David SHEPPARD, and
• Rebecca A. SHEPPARD.
Buried in Middle Ground Baptist Church Cemetery, among the family of the youngest son, William David SHEPPARD, is the burial of "Mittie, Sister of W. D." (Lorenzo Dow, Sarah Jane and Rebecca A., the youngest child, are also buried in this lot). Evidently a tenth child of Lorenzo Dow & Sarah Jane, Mittie could possibly be the Martha SHEPHERD, age 16, who was enumerated in the Screven County, Georgia, Census of 1850 living in the household of William M. CARR, a merchant who moved his family from North Carolina to Georgia about 1841. Martha was likely employed in that household as a domestic or in the family store as a clerk. If this Martha SHEPHERD is Mittie SHEPPARD, then she would be the eldest child of Lorenzo Dow & Sarah Jane, born about 1834.
