Myrtle Evlin Simonton Shepherd
Myrtle Shepherd, age 76, a long time Gary resident, passed away November 13, 1995 at her home in Gary at her home in Gary following a lengthy illness. Myrtle was born February 5, 1919 at Enchant, Canada, a daughter of Henry and Alava (Halverson) Hendrickson. For a good portion of her childhood she was raised by her foster parents, Roy and Dora Humbert in Gary, SD. She attended schools in Gary and graduated from Gary High School. She was united in marriage to Marion Simonton on August 28. 1938. After their marriage they farmed in the Gary area for several years until her husband's death. She married Lawrence Pearle Shepherd on June 6, 1958. They lived in South Shore, Stockholm, Watertown and Gary, SD areas. Mr. Shepherd passed away on September 5, 1981. She is survived by tow daughters, Annette Parrow of Watertown and Karen A. Stone of Gary, two sons, Kenneth Simonton of Watertown and Tolliver (TJ) Simonton of Marshall, MO, four step daughter, Ramona Rabine of Watertown, Rosella Silva of Fremont, CA, Marlene Wilson of Barnesville, MN, and Jeannine Shepherd of South Shore; three step sons, Lester Shepherd of Livermore, CA, Stanley Shepherd of Worthing, and Charles Shepherd of Huron; 19 grandchildren, 15 step grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren, 13 step great grandchildren, and seven nieces and nephews. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, her foster parents, two sons, a step son , a step daughter, one sister, one brother, two granddaughters and one great grand daughter.
Myrtle was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary and for many years she was the choir director and organist for the church. She played for a multitude of funerals and weddings in many different area churches. Prior to her illness she was active in the Gate City Senior Citizens of Gary and Marshall, MO Senior Citizens.
Funeral services were held on November 16, 1995 at 2 pm at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary with the Rev. Bruce Mueller officiating. Casket bearers were Dalton, Drew, Jody, Ricky, Timothy and Wesley Simonton.

I'm so sorry to hear about Myrtle's death. Back in 1991, we corresponded via mail about her life with my great-great Aunt Dora (Humbert). Myrtle even sent me photos of her. I would love to contact her children to extend my deepest sympathy.|
