Services for Ethelyn Emma Shepard, 93, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Luke's AME Church. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in North Lawrence.
Mrs. Shepard died Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.
She was born April 17, 1913, in Weatherford, Okla., the daughter of Dorothy Jack and Pearl Williams Frey. She moved to Weir and later to Osage City, where she attended public schools and graduated from Osage High School. She attended the Madame C.J. Walker School of Beauty in Kansas City, Mo.
Mrs. Shepard was a member of St. John's AME Church in Osage City and St. James AME Church in Lawrence, where she had many positions including steward, stewardess, trustee, missionary, church clerk, condolence clerk and announcement clerk. She also sang in the choir, cleaned the church each Saturday morning and sponsored many church dinners.
She married Eugene Rollie Shepard on Dec. 23, 1935, in Lawrence. He died June 13, 1978.
A son, James Rollie Shepard, died Oct. 31, 1981.
Survivors include three sons, Donald and wife Ermal, and Bill and wife Alcenia, all of Lawrence, and Stephen and wife Ruth, Denver; a daughter, Cleo Jackson and husband Greg, Lenexa; two brothers, Jack Frey, St. Louis, and Donald Frey, Fairfield, Calif.; a sister–in-law, Eva Sexton, Salt Lake City; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
