A Graveside Service will be held in Prospect Hill Cemetery,

Ruth was born in West Caldwell on July 4, 1918. She graduated from Caldwell High School in 1936 followed by New Jersey College for Women, now the Douglas Campus at Rutgers, in 1940.

Following her graduation she began her career as a Home Economics Teacher and taught in the Roseland, Caldwell, Newton and Clifton School Systems for many years before retiring in the mid 70's.

Her family has deep roots in West Caldwell which was a motivating factor when she co-founded the West Caldwell Historical Society, which is now headquartered in her grandparent's former home at 289 Westville Ave.

Ruth was a lifelong member and supporter of the First Presbyterian Church of Caldwell where she was active in various circles, taught Sunday school, and served as a representative to the church Synod.

In her spare time she pursued her artistic talents as a weaver and artist. She and her husband established a long tradition of making their own Christmas cards each year and her artwork was usually the centerpiece of each card. When the boys were young she was actively involved with their scouting activities and later gave freely of her time and instilled many life skills in her children.

Ruth was the beloved wife of the late Ralph H. Shepard, Sr.; loving mother of Lawrence of Milford, NJ, Ralph Jr. of Ferrisburgh, VT and Richard of Tacoma, WA; dear sister of Marilyn Williams of Wakefield, RI; cherished grandmother of Emily Hoyler of Ripton, VT, Dr. R. Hamilton Shepard, III of Somerville, MA, Sandra DuBose of Lake City, FL, Raymond Shepard of Flemington, NJ and Sarah Shepard of Tacoma, WA and the great-grandmother of Jack, Maggie, Phoebe, Garrett and Casey.
