Mary Lou Williamson, 93, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2011, in Raleigh, NC. She was born on July 13, 1918, in Chatham, VA., daughter of the late Samuel D. Shelton and Mary Ida Glenn Shelton.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Donis Beasley and husband Terry, of Raleigh, her grandchildren, Jennifer Cheng and Jason Beasley, her dear great grandchildren, Dylan, Mei Leigh, and Danica. She will also be deeply missed by her sister Lillian Phillips, of Danville, VA. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, James Monroe Williamson. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Lorena S. Shelton, Louise S. Jones and three brothers, Richard Shelton, Perry Shelton and Stover Shelton, Sr.
Mary Lou was a member of and represented the values of The Greatest Generation. Desiring to serve her country in WWII, she enlisted in the Women's Army Corps in 1943 and served for two years supporting the war effort. Mary Lou believed in service to the public. She worked for the Maryland Dept. of Employement Security Commission and retired from Guilford County Dept. of Social Services where she could use her compassion to assist those less fortunate. Even after her retirement from a career of public service, Mary Lou remained a part of the work force with various part time jobs well into her 80's. It was this work ethic that she inpressed upon her family and on those with whom she was close. Independence was her mantra and she lived into her 90's as a self sufficient and vital woman. Her lifetime was one of achievement, but always took time for her love of baseball and basketball which became her passion in her later years. Those of us who knew her are better people for that. We will miss her, but know that she and Monroe are continuing to love the Lord in their new home together.
The family will receive family and friends on Monday, December 5, from 6:00-8:00 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh NC. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, December 6, Soapstone United Methodist Church, 12837 Norwood Rd, Raleigh. Graveside service will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
