Seldom had the Canadian club house in Mt. Vernon avenue held a merrier company than last evening when the ladies of the Gate City Embroidery club, and the gentlemen, gathered there for a “hard times” party.
The occasion not demanding it, the decorations were not conspicuous, in fact, there were none at all, the spectacle of the wonderful efforts in costuming engaging the entire attention of the guests.
The competition in toilettes was keen, and those whose array resembled the findings of the garret or old clo’ shop were present in numbers.
Dancing was the feature of the evening, the grand march being led by Mrs. Fred Robeson and Mr. Hammond, and during the evolutions, there was ample time for inspection of the creations.
Mrs. R.G. Nish (and two others) acted as judges, and awarded the honors to Mrs. Robeson and James Russell as the ‘tackiest” couple present. A beautiful vase was presented to the lady, and an Irish pig filled with candy to the gentleman. Their costumes were most striking. The lady wore a tight plaid waist, and brown skirt “in ribbons”, a “pill box hat” and her hair in a Psyche knot of the most exaggerated style.
Mr. Russell’s tie at least matched the lady’s waist, being an enormous plaid. His suit was of a rather remote date, but striking in cut, and a watch chain of dog chain dimension was a crowing feature of his “get up”.
The guests at the “hard times” evening were: Mr. and Mrs. R.G. Nish (and 27 others).

Ruby Nish entertained the ladies with piano selections, and while the ladies stitched on their needlework, plans were discussed for a picnic outing in the mountains in the near future when the families of the members will be included in the fun.
Mrs. J.H. Alvord was a guest of the club, the other ladies present (numbering seven).
