Thelma May Shelley Geist was born in Texas to William Peter Dempsey Shelley and Adeline May Wright. Her family moved from Texas to California about 1930 as the census for Sonora, Tuolumne County California lists her parents and Thelma age 22, with siblings Gladys, Kiah and Iva living there. They may have gone back to Texas soon after, as the story told by Thelma was while living in Sweetwater, Nolan County, Texas she met her future husband, Clifford Charles Geist. Clifford was born in Kansas and as a young man worked the rodeo circuit as a calf roper, later in the construction field as a roofer. Thelma said that how Clifford proposed was that he had taken her to a piece of property he bought and said that she needed to pick out curtains, or something to that effect. They moved around a bit, living in Colusa, California where first born son Norman was born, Idaho Falls, Idaho where daughter Laverne was born, and back to central California where Ira and Kenneth were born. Thelma was all about family and went to several family reunions, and proud of her heritage.
