J. Kent Sheffer, 86, of Naples, FL, and Fremont, OH, died Thursday, September 23, 2009 in The Toledo Hospital.

He was born in Gibsonburg, OH, September 16, 1923, to John and Rue Ella Sheffer, and was a graduate of Gibsonburg High School and Bowling Green State University.

Kent spent four years in the U. S. Navy serving during WWII.

After the war he returned to Gibsonburg, and entered the Ford dealership there (Madison Garage Co.) working for his father, John Sheffer. In 1969 he took ownership of the agency which later became Sheffer Ford, Inc. J. Kent retired in 1990.

Kent loved the game of golf and in recent years was active in and enjoyed working with the First Tee, an organization teaching children the game of golf.

He was a member of Imperial Golf Club in Naples, FL, the Fremont Country Club, Faith United Methodist Church, the Zenobia Shrine of Toledo, Masonic Lodge #575 and American Legion Post #17 in Gibsonburg.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Shirley (Spencer); sons, Michael of Bowling Green, OH and Patrick (Renee) of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Joel (Joy) and Angela Sheffer; four great-grandchildren also survive.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Rue Ella; sisters, Margaret Wolfe and Winnifred Schlea.

Kent's family will be receiving friends during an open house at the Herman-Kinn-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 319 W. Madison St., Gibsonburg, on Friday, September 25, 2009 from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. A Memorial Service and time of fellowship will be celebrated on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, 795 W. Madison St., Gibsonburg, OH, with Pastor Jerel Jackson officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Faith United Methodist Church in Gibsonburg, First Tee of Lake Erie, c/o the Fremont Country Club, 2340 E. State St., Fremont, OH 43420, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
