He was born in Wood County on May 17, 1937, a son of the late Mabel T. (Dye) Jones.
He served his country in the United States Navy, retired with 35 years of employment from Corning Glass, and was a member of Mt. Zion Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Mary Derenberger Shears of Mineral Wells; four children, Gregory Shears (Debra M.) of Rockport, Terrie M. Kiley (Bob) of Mineral Wells, William Shears of Mineral Wells and Judith A. Farner (Stephen) of Parkersburg; sister, Barbara Thornton of Parkersburg; and several loving grand- and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his three brothers, Richard, William and Daniel Jones; four sisters, Madeline Eddy, Mary Smith, Loretta Mulinex and Alice Cowen; and his loving dog, "Mutley."
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg, with the Rev. Dr. William R. Thomas officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Mineral Wells. Military graveside rites will be by American Legion Post 15.
