Joan M. Bixby, 75, of Ulster, PA died at her home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Joan was born in Mansfield, PA on February 8, 1935 the daughter of Robert Shaw and the late Pauline Clark Shaw. She was a graduate of Mansfield High School class of 1953.

In earlier years, she worked as a nurse at the Wellsboro and Troy Hospitals. She also worked for a time at Bishop's Restaurant in Ulster.

Joan was active in the Ulster Fireman's Auxiliary and served on the Ulster Election Board. Joan loved to cook and overcame many obstacles in life inspired by her love for her family especially her children, their spouses and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Pauline Shaw in 1987.

She is survived by: Her Father, Robert Shaw of Mansfield, PA; Sons: Steve Bixby and his wife Karen of Ulster, PA Mike Bixby and his wife Lynnette of Fassett, PA Tom Bixby and his wife Michelle of East Smithfield, PA Joe Bixby of East Smithfield, PA; Daughter, Susan Hadlock and her husband Ralph of Ulster, PA; Grandchildren: Tony Bixby, Michelle LeVan, Megan Bixby, Tyler Bixby, Eli Bixby, Brooke Hadlock and Ryan Hadlock; Great-Grandchildren, Hailey Bixby and Morgan LeVan; Sisters: Deanna Rumsey and her husband Jerry of Mansfield, PA Paula Bush and her husband Arthur of Greenville, SC; Brothers: Gary Shaw of Mansfield, PA Paul Shaw and his wife Connie of Mansfield, PA; Numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; A Special Friend, Romayne Cotter. Special thanks to daughter-in-law, Karen Bixby and Guthrie Hospice nurse Anja Miller for their exceptional care of Joan during her illness as well as her sons and daughter and their family's.

The funeral service will be held Friday, August 6, 2010 at 3 p.m. at the Bowen-Farr Funeral Home, 6 Gordon Farr St. Ulster, PA with the Rev. Sandy Brant, pastor of the Ulster United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be Saturday morning in the Oakwood Cemetery, Mansfield, PA.
The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to the Mather Memorial Library, PO Box Ulster, PA 18850 or to the Ulster-Sheshequin Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary in care of Kirby McClain, RR 2 Ulster, PA. 18850 in Joan M. Bixby's memory.
