Melverda "Mel" Sharp Scarbrough, 67, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Scarbrough was a homemaker and a member of Central Baptist Church. Her family and her church were her main interests, her family said.
She was active in many church activities and was like a substitute mom to many of the children she came in contact with, according to her family, who added that she had a knack for forming relationships with young people.
Born Sept. 18, 1932, in Tyronza, Ark., she was the daughter of Robert Marvin and Edna Sharp.
She and her husband, J.C. Scarbrough, who survives her, would have celebrated 46 years of marriage on May 9.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Scarbrough is survived by her son, Mark F. Scarbrough of Oak Ridge; her daughters, Joyce Ann Fry, Mary Hackworth and her husband, Dennis, and Janet Schumpert and her husband, Richard, all of Oak Ridge; her sister, Freda Cox of Knoxville; and seven grandchildren, Michael Dixon, Melanie Scarbrough, Jennifer Scarbrough, Benjamin Schumpert and Joshua Fry, all of Oak Ridge, and Andy Hackworth and Rocky Hackworth, both of Clinton.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at Central Baptist Church. The Rev. Bob Gray and the Rev. Richard Schumpert will officiate.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Century Lions Club for Operation Kid Sight, c/o James Kolb, 122 Mockingbird Lane, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Weatherford Mortuary is handling arrangements.
