He was a lifelong resident of Independence and attended William Chrisman High School, Kansas City Junior College and the University of Kansas, becoming a lifelong Jayhawk fan.
Herb spent more than 15 years with Bendix Corporation. He also worked for King Radio and was a successful real estate professional before retiring.
An avid gardener, Herb spent much of his time tending to the flowers in his garden.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Steven and Douglas Shackelford, a daughter Janet Kay Whitney and a grandson Donny Shackelford.
He is survived by his loving and beautiful wife of 55 years, Marge; daughter, Margie Hill; son Jeffrey and his wife Deb; daughter-in-law Connie Shackelford; son-in-law Wallace Whitney; two brothers, Jack Shackelford and wife Mary Anne; Dale Shackelford and wife Helen; one sister Gloria Taylor and husband Robert; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be April 10, 2006 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel. Visitation will be at Floral Hills East Cemetery.
