Lieutenant William Seton, the 2nd child (the oldest son) was born to William Seton, Jr. and Elizabeth Ann (Bayley) Seton, on November 25, 1796, in New York, New York. He was educated at Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg Maryland, near his mother's convent of St Joseph's. In 1817, he was made a Midshipman in the United States Navy, and, in 1826, he was elevated to rank of Lieutenant.

On July 17, 1832, William was married to Emily Prime, the daughter of Nathaniel and Cornelia (Sands) Prime and soon after retired from the Navy.

Lieutenant William Seton III, died on January 13, 1868, in New York, New York, and was buried at Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
