GUSTAV ALBERT SENNER

Gustav Albert Senner was born April 15, 1851 at Fullengen, southern Germany and died in his home in Bucks Grove neighborhood November 5, at the age of 85 years. He is the last of his generation, is brothers, Jake, George and Albert all preceded him in death. Happy childhood and youthful days of the Senner family were spent on the farm in the old home county, where religious training was given along side the industrious, thrifty ways of living. That early training proven so valuable and complete in its production of men and women outstanding in strength and beauty of character.
When Gustav was a lad 18 years old he made the then long journey across the Atlantic into America, reaching at last this section of Kansas where he met relatives and selected land for a home. His parens and brothers came with him to America on his return trip two years later and together they established a home in the new west.
Death besit harshly with the family when the father was stricken and died scarcely two years after their arrival here, however the widowed mother and sons kept the home together, and were prosperous, valuable citizens. Their home became an inspiration to the entire community for their honest and thrifty German habits taught much.
Gustav was a Christian, true in heart and in form for he believed in worship, attended regularly as long as he was physically able. Not so many years ago he came to services at this church (Bucks Grove) and rode his horse to both the morning and evening service for many, many years. He gave generously of his possessions to the church maintenance with all its connections -- the hospitals, orphan homes, schools and wherever else he felt there was need.
Flowers were his great delight and the happiest times of his life were spent with his growing things in garden and fields. He wished to share this interest with his friends and neighbors, and truly enjoyed giving flowers, bulbs, roots, slips and seeds.
He knew and loved the ministers who came to serve this church and always enjoyed their visits to his home. No one ever visited him without receiving a gift, for the marked characteristic of his life was his kindness and generosity of heart, unselfishly sharing his substance as long as life gave him strength. Surely a love as deep as that comes from his devotion to God's will and word. Mr Senner loved to read his Bible and in these late years often asked his friends to read it to him. God's word without doubt was a "Lamp unto his feet" --the tired old feet which have at last reached the end of the journey. The reward has come; the loneliness and troubled ways of the world have been exchanged for he Home his spirit has sought so long.
Funeral services were held at the Bucks Grove church Sunday afternoon, Nov. 7th, in the presence of a very large audience of relatives and family friends, Rev. Geo. Engel of the Soldier M.E. Church officiating, assisted by Rev. Straw. The casket bearers were elderly men, friends of this pioneer family.
