Leo W. “Bud” Self, 94, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, at Laurel Ridge Nursing Home in Clovis.
He was born Feb. 2, 1911, in McKinney, Texas, to Frances Rosetta and Floyd Evert Self.
He married Mae Bell Earwood on Sept. 30, 1933, in Hugo, Okla. They farmed in Causey until the mid-1940s when they moved to Portales where he worked at a service station and later as a Dr. Pepper route driver. They also lived in Lubbock and Denver and were house parents at Christian children’s homes.
Family members said he was a baseball pitcher, and turned down the opportunity to play professionally to stay home and support his family. He loved watching baseball and gardening. He liked to trade cars and owned many cars in his lifetime, including an Edsel, a Hudson and a Rambler.
He was a member of the Southside Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, A.H., Bill and Fouston Self; two sisters, Louise Griffin and Zelna Bennett; and his wife, Mae Bell, on May 26, 2002.
Survivors include his son, Charles (and wife Carol) Self of Clovis; daughter, Melba (Glenn) Eagle of Clovis; four grandchildren, Rae Lynn Griest, April Medley, Greg (Bernice) Eagle and Charles David Self; four step-grandchildren, Phobie (Greg) Privett, Coby (Larissa) Dickson, Chip Eagle and Jennifer Eagle; great-grandchild Sabrina Griest, and five step-great-grandchildren Jessie Privett, Ryann Privett, Alexandria, Tiffany and Thomas Eagle; and one brother, Gene Self of Oroville, Calif.
Leslie Earwood and Skip Clark will officiate services.
Burial will be at Rest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery south of Portales.
Pallbearers are Charles Self, C.D. Self, Chip Eagle, Coby Dickson, Greg Privett and Gerald Daughrity.
Honorary pallbearers are Harold Knox, Emil Johnson, Marlin Poynor, Jack Self and Leroy Thomas.
