Burt Secord passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. He was born September 27, 1919 at home on Avenue B in Austin, Texas to Stephen Burt Secord and Julia Pearl Jones.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Secord, his brothers, Alfred Secord and Carlton Secord and his parents, Stephen Burt Secord and Julia Pearl Jones.
Burt grew up watching Mr. Harris play checkers in the Avenue B Grocery, riding the street cars to downtown, watching westerns at Skinny Pryor's picture show, eating hamburgers at Dirty Martin's and camping with the Boy Scouts on Mt Bonnell. He was a fourth generation Texan having descended from pioneer families who settled on Bull Creek in 1860. He graduated from Austin High School in 1939 and attended Schreiner Institute in Kerrville, Texas.
In 1940, Burt went to Camp Mabry with several high school friends to enlist in the service. He entered the Texas National Guard and then began his training to serve as a pilot in the Army Air Corp. He was assigned to the 57th Fighter Group, 65th Squadron, one of the most decorated fighter aircraft units in WW II, and flew fifty missions in the P-40 Warhawk and fifty five missions flying the P-47 Thunderbolt. He participated in campaigns throughout Northern Africa, Malta and Northern Italy and was decorated with an Air Medal with six OLC, EAME Campaign Medal with four Bronze Service Stars and a Distinguished Unit Citation Badge.
He married Alice Elaine Fly on October 31, 1944 in Goldsboro, North Carolina and they were married for fifty-two years. They moved to Dallas in 19 51 where he was an executive with Republic Oil and Gas and Jake L. Hamon Oil Company.
In 1997, Burt returned to Austin to be near his family. He lovingly participated in the lives of his children, grandchildren, dear neighbors and treasured friends. He met with local World War II veterans and attended Reunions of the 57th Fighter Group.
Burt is survived by his son Charles Secord and wife Diane of Haines City, Florida, his daughter Tina Kemmerer and husband Jon, grandchildren William and Allison Kemmerer of Austin, Sean Foster and wife Racquel and their children, Ciera, Aaron and Emma of Dallas and sister-in-law, Edna Secord of Austin.
A memorial service honoring Burt's life will be held Monday March 8th at 10:00 AM at Weed –Corley-Fish Chapel, 3125 N Lamar Blvd., Austin.
