Richard Secord arrived in present day Edmonton, AB on September 1, 1881. He helped survey the Edmonton town site and helped build the first public school. In 1888 he opened a trading store on the Landing on two lots he purchased from the Hudson Bay Co. After selling this business back to the Co. in 1890, he re-established his trading company in Edmonton. He and his wife, Anna York, built the mansion Chateau Rochelle which, after their death became the first Edmonton Art Gallery.
