ST. GEORGE -- Lila Searle Empey, age 90, died Sunday, May 16, 2004 at her home in St. George, Utah. She was born June 5, 1913 in Magrath, Alberta, Canada to Charles Ernest and Jessie Emmeline Hillier Searle. On July 2, 1938 she married Clark Foster Empey in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were later sealed in the St. George Temple. He died on April 21, 2004. They were separated from each other for 23 days, the longest they have been apart for 65 years. Now they are together again.
Lila grew up in Canada, she moved to Salt Lake City at a young age to attend Beauty School. She met Clark when she came to St. George to work at Glen's Barber Shop. She moved back to Salt Lake City and worked in the ZCMI beauty shop. Clark convinced her she should marry him and move back to St. George.
Lila worked as a beautician for many years and helped with the family business, Empey Electric. She also worked in retail sales at the E B Snow Furniture Store when her family was old enough. She held many church callings including serving in the 4th Ward Relief Society Presidency.
She was the first president of the Alice Louise Reynolds literary club, a past state and local President of the PTA, a past president of the St. George Lady Lions, and a member of the St. George Volunteer Fire Dept. auxiliary. Clark and Lila were members of the Washington County Sheriff's Posse, a group that entertained by square dancing on horseback. They enjoyed many activites with a special group of friends that called themselves "The Over The Hill Gang".
Lila enjoyed riding horses, camping and being outdoors. She was a member of a bridge club for over 60 years. She was a talented cook and seamstress. She loved collecting and creating beautiful things including handicrafts. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and the quintessential lady.
Survivors include one son and two daughters: Joseph (Sylvia) Empey of St. George; Jessalyn (Bain) Swapp of Kanab; Jane (Jerry) Benson of Hurricane; 18 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters, one great grandson and one great grand-daughter.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 20, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 So. Bluff St., St. George, Utah. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 19, 2004 from 7 8 p.m. and again from 12:30 1:30 p.m. prior to services at the mortuary. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lights for Life or the charity of your choice in Lila's name.
