Ashley W. Scott was born in 1826 in Obion County, Tennessee, the fifth child of William Finney Scott and Sarah Hawkins Scott. He moved with his family to Texas in 1850, settling in Henderson County. He enlisted in the CSA in Athens, Texas, on March 1, 1862. He was among those captured upon surrender at Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, Ark. in Jan 1863 and Ashley ended up at Camp Douglas, Chicago, surviving less than a month in the wretched conditions.
