When President Kennedy arrived, Joe and KRLD reporter Frank Gleiber, had been shooting footage at Love Field, and had then returned to the studio to process and edit the film for the network feed. Suddenly they got word of the assassination attempt in Dealey Plaza from their reporters stationed at the Trade Mart, and he and and KRLD's young, reporter-photographer, 22 year-old Joseph Steven "Steve" Pieringer (who died at 27, findagrave memorial# 107867081), raced from their studios to the Texas School Book Depository in the KRLD mobile unit, arriving only minutes after the assassination of President Kennedy.
From in front of the Depository, he and Pieringer, filmed the chaotic scenes with their 16mm camera and reported live on KRLD radio, broadcasting the breaking news as it happened in front of them. Sometime after 1pm (not sure precisely), Joe took the film back to the studio for processing and editing for the network feed, leaving Pieringer, along with Sandy Sanderson and Jim Underwood (two other KRLD reporters) to cover the Depository scene. That film has sadly disappeared, as have several others, but their live radio broadcast was archived and may now be heard on youtube under KRLD radio live assassination coverage - Scott begins at 4:55 and he broadcasts intermittantly thereafter. Pieringer reports briefly at 7:18: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjsorZx4q6U
Joe Scott, tragically died at just 33 years of age after a "brief illness" in 1965. He predeceased his father, J.D. (also Joe Dave) by 11 and 13 years respectively.
He was a 1955 graduate of SMU and while there was very active as the photographer for the "Limbo" magazine and Issue Editor for "The SMU Campus" student newspaper.
